Tech Talk #8: Attempting the Ekphrastic

March 28, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Attempting the ekphrastic: The corrugating effect of Instagram and the Open Science Framework presented by PhD Candidate Madeline Donald.

Alt-text or alternative text is a key accessibility feature for content online, allowing folks who are blind or low-vision to engage with visual content through rich, descriptive text read out loud by a screen reader. Simple, one might think. This Tech Talk will provide a glimpse into the worlds of captioning, alt-text, and how technologies including these features encourage creators to engage thickly with their content, not only making it more accessible to more people but also facilitating a creation process that folds in layers of experience and increases communication potential.

Madeline is a daughter, partner, friend, co-thinker/dreamer, and PhD student presently living in and with the Okanagan watershed in the unceded and occupied syilx homelands. Her current research is grounded in relational research methodologies and saturated by the riparian habitats of the Okanagan watershed.

This event will be hybrid: in-person and online.
