Tech Talk #9: “The Confluence of Religious Cultures in Medieval Historiography Project”

April 11, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

This Tech Talk is presented by Dr. Francisco Peña and Dr. Miguel Las Heras

The General Estoria is Medieval Europe’s largest universal history, and one of the only such histories written in the vernacular. Unfortunately, and perhaps due to its length and complexity, the GE remains little known in its entirety. In our presentation we will summarize the work we have been developing, in collaboration with the AMP Lab since 2016 with the support of the SSHRC, our international, multidisciplinary research team has successfully tackled the challenges that in the past have prevented scholars from achieving a full comprehension of, and an efficient way of presenting to the public, this complex and voluminous work.

Francisco Peña is PI of The Confluence of Religious Cultures in Medieval Historiography: A Digital Humanities Project finance by the SSHRC Insight Grant. This research project comprises the first interdisciplinary study of the General e grand estoria (GGE). His research is wide-ranging and interdisciplinary in nature involving Literary Studies, Biblical Studies, Religious Studies, and History of Ideas.

Miguel Las Heras is a postdoctoral researcher with a PhD from University of La Rioja (Spain). His research and academic interest are mainly focused on the study of punctuation in Alfonso X the Wise’s historiographical production, as well as on the use of Digital Humanities in his research.

This event will be hybrid: in-person and online.
