Tech Talk 2: “Feminist Consent: Edits and Audio”

October 18, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join us from 12-1pm for a Tech Talk delivered by Sarah Cipes about Feminist Consent and her work on audio edits.

How does an archivist (professional or otherwise) maintain feminist ethics of consent while also attending to the archival ideal of access? Using open-source audio editing software and highly annotated editing practices, it is possible to find practical solutions to such essential questions. We argue that through feminist-based approaches to editing, we can create different types of listening experiences for researchers while maintaining important consent practices. This Tech Talk presents a selection of practice-based examples I have developed based on research done with Dr. Deanna Fong and Dr. Karis Shearer on feminist ethics in the literary audio archive.

Sarah Cipes is a SpokenWeb Graduate Research Assistant and a second-year PhD student in the IGS Digital Arts & Humanities theme. Her research combines audio digitization, feminist technoscience and humour philosophy. Sarah holds a master’s degree in Information Science from the University of Toronto and a BA in English from UBCO.
