PRESS PLAY! Lightbox Exhibition Call 

Open Call to Undergrad Students at UBC Okanagan| DEADLINE: Jan 12, 2024 

CALL TO CURATE: An exhibition call for the AMP Lab’s lightbox exhibition space. Students will receive an undergraduate research assistant (URA) stipend* for research that will result in the curation of a thematic exhibition that engages with one or more poets, and with literary audio objects and media from the SoundBox Collection. Exhibition themes could include eco poetry, the archive, data feminism, place or technology. 

Designed by Philip Wyness, the lightbox is one of a constellation of infrastructure in the AMP Lab to display cultural heritage items in the SoundBox Collection. Conceptualized by Karis Shearer as Press Play infrastructure to activate the core principles of accessibility and scalability, the lightbox is 4’ x 4’, wooden box, illuminated by LED lighting with an adjustable or removable grid. This flexible space can display books, sound media and art and is designed to stimulate conversations. 

WHAT: Students will design a month-long exhibition that investigates the SoundBox Collection. Student curators will select and install exhibition objects (books, papers, sound media) and be part of organizing an opening. Students will write a short exhibition text and will help introduce their exhibition. 

MENTORSHIP: Selected participants will research and design their exhibition with support from SpokenWeb Graduate Research Assistants, mentorship from the project director, Karis Shearer and receive additional support from Philip Wyness. All exhibitions will be highlighted on social media. 

SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL DEADLINE: JAN 12, 2024 | STUDENT SUBMISSION SHOULD INCLUDE: A short biographical statement (150 words) and summary of your proposed exhibition starting ideas including your theme, connection to SpokenWeb and possible materials; sound media, archival objects, books or images (300 words). Successful proposals will be workshopped and further developed collectively.

*URA Stipend & Time Commitment: $300 Undergraduate Research Assistantship Stipend Available to four student curators, with up to a $200 budget for printing and exhibition supplies. Students should commit approximately 15 hours towards this project (in-person & remote work).
