CoLab Pop Up: The AMP Lab

Visit the AMP Lab’s interactive displays that showcase two of its new projects: the SpokenWeb Project, and the Negative Heritage Project (NHP).

The SpokenWeb display will take you through the digitization of an audio archive that primarily consists of reel-to-reel tapes from the 1960’s and 1980’s West Coast literary scene, featuring writers like Earle Birney, Daphne Marlatt, Maria Hindmarch, George Bowering and more, and which also includes local poets like Sharon Thesen. Come by to learn about the processes involved in cataloguing, digitizing, and transcribing old audio media into accessible digital files, and get a chance to listen to rare recordings! The display also features research on the recordings and their poets, and design work based on vintage audio media.

In the afternoon, join team members from the Negative Heritage Project for an interactive journey examining three of the world’s negative heritage sites. Gain hands-on experience with prehistoric and historic artifacts and test your archaeological knowledge to win treats! The digital heritage team is committed to documenting negative heritage sites through digital mapping, with the goal of creating a comprehensive catalogue. In addition to this project, we also aim to evaluating the digital reconstruction of cultural heritage and to shed light upon the existing inequalities within the professional field of archaeology.
