Position Context and Who We’re Looking For
The SpokenWeb Research Network is a research project that aims to develop and connect collections of recorded literary performances from across our international network, engaging with a broad spectrum of inquiries from pedagogy to audio signal analysis. This position will also be responsible for the supervision and animation of the AMP Lab at the UBCO partner institution and will in this capacity report to SpokenWeb co-applicant Karis Shearer. These responsibilities include coordinating the day-to-day activities in the lab including scheduling, training, etc., and supporting student-led projects within the lab as possible.
We are looking for someone who has strong research skills and who enjoys working in a team with other students. Previous experience working with metadata and an interest in literary events will be an asset. The work will be well suited for someone who feels comfortable working by themselves, but also enjoys connecting both in person and virtually with a diverse cohort of academics, librarians, web developers, designers, artists, other students, and community stakeholders.
This position will have a reporting line to SpokenWeb co-applicant Karis Shearer (UBCO) and will liaise with the SpokenWeb Project Manager.
Description of Job Duties
Primary responsibilities of the position would be as follows:
- Supervise and coordinate lab activities at the UBCO AMP Lab
- Scheduling users of the lab
- Liaising with external stakeholders
- Train students to use equipment at the UBCO AMP Lab
- Animate and support opportunities for research creation and mobilization at UBCO via the AMP Lab
- Support the organization of and some grant writing toward the 2025 SpokenWeb Institute, to be hosted at UBCO, as possible
- Producing reports on research activity.
- Conducting research for the SpokenWeb project.
- Promotion of research through social media and other communication channels.
- Attend SpokenWeb team meetings and events to share progress and discuss work with teams at Concordia and UBCO as appropriate.
- There is some flexibility but onsite work is an expectation of this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Salary & Eligibility
Position open to any candidate with familiarity with SpokenWeb’s events, knowledge of Swallow, SpokenWeb’s database, familiarity with SpokenWeb spaces at UBCO, experience organizing community and research events. Candidate must be previously associated with at least two (2) SpokenWeb partner institutions and have attended and supported the organization of SpokenWeb conferences in, at minimum, two (2) locations.
This part-time Tech 4 position comprises a total of 322 hours at a salary of $28.92/hr from October 2024 through June 15, 2025. This equals approximately 10 hours/wk.
